Why do some bumble bees sleep on flowers at night and not return to the nest?

My daughter observed that a few bees slept on a plant in our garden one night, and she wants to know and I do too why they did not return to the nest instead?Why do some bumble bees sleep on flowers at night and not return to the nest?
They were probably males or queens. They leave the colony to mate before starting a new one.
